This discussion was first published as part of the NFPA 2021 Education Conference, entitled ‘Forward: Hope. Care. Change’, and will center around Dr. van der Kolk’s book, ‘The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma‘.

Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., has spent his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences, and has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of treatments for traumatic stress in children and adults.

His efforts resulted in the establishment of Trauma Center (now the Trauma Research Foundation) that consisted of a well-trained clinical team specializing in:

  • The treatment of children and adults with histories of child mistreatment;
  • The application of treatment models that are widely taught and implemented nationwide;
  • The creation of a research lab that studied effects of neurofeedback and MDMA on behaviour, moood and executive functioning;
  • The development of numerous trainings nationwide given to a variety of mental heal professionals, educators, parent groups, policy makers, and law enforcement personnel.
